How a tool gets its verdict
Five signals, measured by code on public data. Each is strong, middling, weak or not measured; the verdict follows from them.
- Last commit
- How recently someone changed the code. A project nobody touches for months is a risk.
- Last release
- How recently a version came out. Releases mean the project ships, not only experiments.
- Forks per 100 stars
- How many people copied the code to build on it, per 100 stars. A fork means work; a star costs nothing.
- Used by packages
- How many published packages depend on it (by deps.dev).
- Backed by
- A large vendor, a company or the community: whoever keeps the project going.
- Use it
- Alive on every signal we could measure — safe to build on.
- Try it
- Mostly alive — worth trying on a small project first.
- Watch
- Mixed signals — keep an eye on it before you depend on it.
- Wait
- Few signs of life — better to wait.
- Stars
- They have their own column so a project is easy to recognise. Never part of the verdict: stars are easy to buy, and a sudden jump puts the tool under review.
